A Wizard in Calafia

A letter to all Swedenborgs

To all the hypocrites manufacters of Tastes who benefit from both producing and consuming no new truths but all falsehoods, to all those who celebrate content creation which has been dismantling for decades the ability to imagine NEW games, while they think themselves the only person on earth who have bring a first glimpse of innovation.

Hear now a concrete fact: any recent ttrpg scene has not written a single new truth.

Now hear another: they have written all the old falsehoods.

And now hear the reason: they conversed with gameplay cultures, who dismantled any future, and did not converse with designers who built one, for their conceited notions rendered them incapable of doing so.

Thus, the most prolific post-pandemic TTRPG writings tend to be rather a recapitulation born either of that innocent ignorance or a convenient opportunism of the most sublime opinions of the 2000s and early 2010s, but nothing more.

Now for another concrete fact: any person with a mechanical talent or with access to LLMs may, from the writings of Dave Wesely, Dave Arneson, Gary Gygax, Greg Stafford, or Steve Perrin, produce ten thousand volumes of equal value to the OSR; and from those of Luke Crane, Jenna K. Moran, or Meguey Baker, an infinite number.

But when they have done so, let them not say that they know more than their masters, for they have merely lit a candle in the light of the sun.

If so, I expect all those who care for media preservation being able to bring new futures do not call you a person of this kind wrong in your notions, but absolutely vitiated.
